"His paintings were often done using encaustic painting techniques, which utilize hot wax and tinted pigments. This quick drying media allowed him to use multiple layers to create a unique effects along with his use of collages. Johns also focused a lot of his themes on common motifs such as flags, maps, targets, numbers and letters."
